The WEA had expressed strong interest in acquiring the Welfare Hall as part of a wider plan to deliver adult education and community programmes in Woodlands. Despite extensive discussions and goodwill from all parties, the purchase was unable to proceed. We recognise the disappointment this caused within the community, particularly after the significant effort invested by local groups, councillors, and supporters.
Actions Taken Since June 2025
Although the WEA bid did not progress, key stakeholders have continued working to secure a sustainable future for the Welfare Hall. Since June 2025, the following steps have been taken:
- Renewed collaboration between the new Trustees, Doncaster Council, CISWO, Coalfields Regeneration Trust and local representatives Regular meetings have taken place to reassess the hall’s condition, funding options, and long‑term viability. This includes direct engagement with Ed Miliband MP and senior council officers.
- Re‑evaluation of the building’s repair and restoration costs Updated assessments have been commissioned to ensure costings reflect essential works only, avoiding the “bells and whistles” approach that previously inflated estimates.
- Strengthening the business case for future funding Work has been undertaken to update the 2022 business plan, focusing on sustainability, community use, and realistic operating models. This includes identifying potential anchor tenants and long‑term hire partners.
- Engagement with community organisations and potential users Discussions have been held with groups such as the Coalfields Regeneration Trust and local childcare providers to explore future use of the hall. These conversations have helped shape a clearer vision for a viable, multi‑use community venue.
- Clarification of funding mechanisms and protections Trustees have secured assurances that any future capital funding would be drawn down directly to contractors, protecting the charity’s financial position.
Commitment to the Community
Brodsworth Miners Welfare Scheme remains committed to preserving the Welfare Hall as a community asset. The hall has stood at the heart of Woodlands for over a century, and we continue to work with partners to secure its regeneration and long‑term sustainability.
Further updates will be shared as soon as new information becomes available.
